Shillong: Meghalaya’s All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in-charge Dr Manas Ranjan Bhunia on Tuesday said the party is targetting the 2023 assembly elections with a positive outlook.
Speaking with media, Dr Bhunia said there are seven to eight months for the elections and the party’s objective is to strengthen the organisation and reach out to people at the grassroots level.
“State, district, booth and block-level, this network is our primary and basic objective and we are really grateful to Leader of Opposition (LOP) Dr Mukul Sangma and former Speaker Charles Pyngrope and their entire team. We are moving, generating and getting enthusiastic workers,” stated Dr Bhunia.
“We are lucky that we got the set up and the network under the leadership of Dr Mukul and Pyngrope, who are both prompt leaders. Our supreme leader Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee are in touch with all of them,” added Dr Bhunia.
Explaining his purpose for the visit to the state, Dr Bhunia said he wanted to see how to make them more productive and how they can be helpful to them.
“Dr Mukul and Charles Pyngrope and other leaders are very much acceptable to the common people of Meghalaya. They are known faces, sincere and known leadership. And we are going to detect our shortcomings and will work on it,” he added.
Asked about the general notion among political experts that the TMC may be able to woo voters in Garo Hills but not the Khasi-Jaintia voters, Dr Bhunia said they are discussing this issue. He said they are giving equal importance to Khasi and Garo Hills and the condition of Khasi is improving because of the failure of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.
“People have started thinking what the alternative is and in that case, the AITC; they are a definitely an option for the Khasi region with tall leaders like Charles Pyngrope and the team,” said Dr Bhunia.
Concerning the mindset that TMC is a Bengal party, Dr Bhunia claimed that the opponents are spreading the rumours.
Explaining about the AITC, he emphasised “it is a nomenclature…that AITC represents all India party and Meghalaya will be represented by the state unit whose leader is Dr Mukul Sangma, Charles Pyngrope and the others”.
