Imphal: Security forces in Manipur have arrested four drug smugglers along with narcotic drugs in three separate operations.
In the first incident, Manipur police have arrested four drug smugglers along with 40 kg of illicit drugs and poppy seeds in Ukhrul district on Friday.
According to Chief Minister N Biren Singh, a team of Imphal East commando arrested the drug smugglers from Shongphel village road and recovered 40 kg of opium and 16 bags of poppy seeds from their possession.
The arrested culprits have been identified as Sham Bahadur Dahal, 23, Sanjit Dahal, 27, Bishnu Adhikari, 42 and Khemraj Adhikari, 31. All the four arrested accused are residents of Shongphel village, Singh said.
There will be zero tolerance for anybody who is involved with illicit drugs, warned the chief minister.
Similarly, in the second incident, based on intelligence inputs, troops of Assam Rifles along with Manipur Police apprehended a drug peddler at border village Songdai in Churachandpur district and recovered 1.76 kg of heroin in 43 soap cases. The seized narcotics were assessed to be worth Rs 7.04 crore, it said.
The recovered items and the drug peddler have been handed over to Singhat Police Station for further legal investigation.
In another case, during routine checking of vehicles at Permanent Vehicle Check Post at Khudengtabi in Tengnoupal district, troops of Assam Rifles intercepted a van.
On thorough search of the van, 109 grams of brown sugar in nine soap cases concealed in the vehicle’s dashboard were recovered. The seized narcotics were assessed to be worth Rs 21.8 lakh, said an official.
The recovered items along with the drug peddler was handed over to Moreh police station for further action, it added.
