Silchar: A 42-year-old government school teacher was arrested by police on Thursday on charges of sexually harassing a minor student in south Assam’s Hailakandi district.
The accused, Anand Swaroop, hails from the Kalibari area of Son Beel in Karimganj district and works as a teacher at Kalibari Higher Secondary School.
The minor student’s father lodged an FIR at Hailakandi Sadar police station on Thursday. The father alleged that the school teacher had sexually harassed his daughter while she went to his rented house at College Road in Hailakandi town for tuition class on Wednesday evening.
“He was teaching my daughter in his house. Initially, he gave an indecent proposal and later tried forcing himself on her,” the girl’s father alleged.
Sources said a group of people beat up the teacher on Wednesday evening after the alleged incident came to light. A team from Hailakandi Sadar police station rushed to the spot after receiving the information and took him into custody.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered against the accused under Sections 354A (sexual harassments) and 294 (obscene acts or words in public) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 12 (sexual harassments to a child) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The officer in-charge of Hailakandi Sadar police station told EastMojo on Friday that the accused was produced in a court on Thursday and sent to judicial custody.
