Silchar: Maizgram in Assam’s Karimganj district has been simmering with communal tension for the past couple of days over attacks on a family allegedly by a group of people belonging to another community on April 23.
Maizgram falls under Karimganj North assembly constituency, about 62 km from Silchar town.
Sathi Rudra Paul, wife of Bhanu Rudra Paul, said in her police complaint that on April 23 around 1 pm, an Alto car with four occupants hit their cow in Maizgram. This was followed by a heated verbal exchange between her husband and the occupants of the car. A local resident then intervened, following which the matter was settled, she said in her complaint.
Her complaint further stated that around 2 pm the same day, the four men barged into their house and attacked her family members, including her husband, son, daughter and her brother-in-law with sharp weapons, iron rods and bamboo sticks. Around 15-16 more persons also joined the four accused, she told the police.
Her complaint further read, “The attackers molested our 12-year-old daughter. Hearing our screams, neighbours started gathering after which the miscreants fled away. All the family members were gravely injured in the attack.”
The family lodged an FIR the same day at Karimganj Sadar police station against the four men, identified as Abdul Hannan, Enam Uddin, Salai Uddin and Nurul Ahmed. All of them hail from Pathu area in Karimganj.
Sources said both Sathi and her husband are undergoing treatment at the hospital currently.
Meanwhile, Subrata Bhattacharjee, District BJP president, reached Maizgram on Saturday night after getting the news of the incident. He spoke to Karimganj Superintendent of Police Padmanabh Baruah and requested for necessary action, the sources said.
On Monday, members of right-wing groups – Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal – along with Maizgram residents had staged a protest in Karimganj, demanding the arrest of the culprits involved in the attack.
The members of the organisation claimed there were at least 19 men involved in the attack and demanded their immediate arrest. They also threatened to intensify their movement if their demand is not fulfilled.
Local residents have also appealed to the District Administration and local police for appropriate steps to ensure that such incidents do not spiral out of control into major communal violence.
Talking to EastMojo on Tuesday, Bhanu Rudra Paul said there were many people involved in the attack on their family, but he could not identify everyone. He said he is hopeful that the police would nab all the miscreants, take stern action against them and give them justice.
A senior police official told reporters on Monday evening that three men had been held in connection with the case so far. A manhunt is on to nab the other accused.
Deputy superintendent of police (headquarter), Karimganj, Gitartha Sarma told EastMojo that “a case under sections 326, 143, 147 and 149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered regarding the incident.”
When asked if forces have been deployed in Maizgram following the incident, the DSP said the situation is normal and there is no need for it.
The BJP MLA from Karimganj’s Patharkandi, Krishnendu Paul, said the police should intensify its investigation and nab all those involved in the attack at the earliest. “Each and every miscreant involved in the crime will be held. Nobody will be spared,” Paul said.
