Agaratala : A team of Congress leaders led by AICC observer for Tripura Pradesh Congress Dr Ajoy Kumar on Thursday met Chief Election Commissioner of India Sushil Chandra and sought its intervention to conduct free and fair elections.
The Congress delegates also urged the election watchdog to send a team of officials to evaluate the ground situation prevalent in the state.
After the meeting, Dr Kumar, also a member of CWC, said, “It is near impossible to hold fair elections free of any violence. The violence marred civic body polls that were held very recently conveys what could happen in the forthcoming elections. The rule of BJP in Tripura is nothing short of anarchy”.
Citing the instances of violent attacks, he alleged, “The Congress party office was attacked in front of police. Our leaders are facing attacks. Congress supporters are being targeted by the BJP sponsored miscreants. The voice of the opposition is being throttled every day. No one is spared. Sudip Roy Barman, Birajit Sinha all senior leaders came under attack”.
Dr Kumar said: “All these issues had been put forward before the Chief Election Commissioner and he had given a patient hearing to the grievances and complaints of the Congress party. The ECI has given the assurance to support us.”
Dr Kumar also expressed his sharp disappointment over the role of police and said that despite repeated attempts police hardly took any action against the miscreants sponsored by the ruling BJP. He, however, hoped that the Election Commission would take the suggestions given by the Congress very seriously and ensure foolproof security deploying Central Armed Forces.
