Guwahati: The Met office has predicted inclement weather during the upcoming Rongali Bihu celebrations in Assam and other parts of the Northeast. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) on Tuesday issued an alert for increased pre-monsoon rainfall activity over the North-eastern states on April 13 and 16, 2022.
“Moisture incursion is very likely to occur due to strong low-level Southerly/ Southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India during April 13 to 16, 2022. Under its influence, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is very likely to occur over the Northeast region during the four days. Thunderstorm/ lightning with gusty winds (40-50 km per hour) is also expected during April 14-15, 2022 over Assam,” a statement from RMC, informed here.
The seven-day Bohag Bihu celebrations get underway on April 14. The festival is being celebrated this year after a pandemic-induced break since 2020.
On Monday, the RMC had informed of a cyclonic circulation over west Assam and the neighbourhood at 0.9 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft with its axis at 1.5 km above mean sea level and runs roughly along 89 degrees East longitude and to the north of 23 degrees North latitude.
The Northeast has been witnessing high rainfall for the past couple of weeks. This year’s first floods were reported in the Dibrugarh district last Wednesday, affecting several hundreds of people.
The probable impacts of increased rainfall activity, the Met office said, could be an occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall, waterlogging in low-lying areas, localised landslides, possibilities of flash floods, increase in river water levels, temporary disruption of traffic due to water-logging in roads leading to increased travel time, damage to kutcha roads owing to very heavy rainfall, the possibility of damages to vulnerable structures due to very heavy rainfall and strong winds.
