Tinsukia: A week of relentless downpour has led to saturation of soil on the rolling slopes of the hilly terrain in Arunachal Pradesh’s Dibang Valley and Lohit district, bringing vehicular traffic to a complete standstill due to landslides.

The prolonged downpour triggered landslides at several stretches on NH-13 and NH-313, bringing down boulders and slurry blocking roads. However, no untoward incidents has been reported during the landslides.

National Highway 13 – earlier known as NH 229 and NH 52, and National Highway 313 – a spur road of NH 13, are strategically important highways that enhance the Indian military’s capabilities in combating the threat of China’s Western Theater Command opposite India’s eastern sector of Line of Actual Control.

Taking cognizance of the situation, the district administration of Lohit District has issued a traffic advisory.

“It is hereby informed to all concerned that due to incessant rainfall since last one week, vulnerability of occurrence of landslides has increased due to which several instances of road blockage have been reported between Tohangam and Brahmakund Tri junction road NH-13 by NHIDCL Authority. The road is not safe for movement of traffic and there is danger to human life, health and safety,” the advisory said.

“Therefore, general public are hereby advised to avoid travelling via Tohangam and Brahmakund Tri junction road for the next 72 hours. The road will be closed for any traffic movement till next 72 hours i.e till 07.04.2022,” the advisory read.

In a similar advisory, the deputy commissioner of Dibang Valley has requested all concerned to avoid travelling via NH 313 on Anini-Roing road for next 72 hours. 

Although monsoon rains cause landslides every year, increasing economic activity and the climate crisis are spiking the risk, especially in the fragile upper reaches of Arunachal Pradesh, in the eastern Himalayas and Western Ghats among others.
