Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other party members at Congress MLA Sashi Kanta Das' residence on Sunday

Guwahati: Congress MLA from Raha, Sashi Kanta Das, who is under suspension for “expressing his desire to support the state government in the interest of his constituency”, on Sunday said he would vote for one of the candidates of the BJP-led alliance in the March 31 Rajya Sabha election in Assam.

“As I have been placed under suspension by the party (Congress) and have not been thereafter invited to the Congress legislature party meeting, I will support the BJP-led alliance’s nominated candidate in the Rajya Sabha election. I will abide by the instructions of the chief minister,” Das told a section of the media after the chief minister visited his residence on Sunday morning.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma discounted the value of the party whip by saying, “There is no value of party whip in a Rajya Sabha election. Basically, the ballot paper has to be shown…Generally, no legislator from the party is disqualified regardless of which party’s candidate the MLA votes for. The only thing here is that the MLA has to make it known to whom the vote has been given.”

Taking to Twitter, the chief minister disclosed his meeting with the Congress MLA at the latter’s Dimou Chariali residence this morning, also mentioning that he reviewed developmental activities in the area and discussed ways to accelerate them further.

In December last year, Das, who has not yet joined the ruling party though, met the chief minister and said he would support the state government by being in the Opposition, in the interest of the uplift of areas under Raha constituency.

Das had defeated Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) candidate Bishnu Das in the state Assembly elections last year.
