Guwahati: A Superintendent of taxes posted in Morigaon, along with a ‘close confidante’ of his, have been arrested in a bribery case by a team from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam, on Saturday.

On the basis of inputs received, a team from the state vigilance and anti-corruption department laid a trap near the hospital of the complainant to catch Rajesh Kumar Gupta red handed as he collected a bribe of Rs 30,000 from the complainant on behalf of superintendent of taxes Sonit Borthakur.

Sources said that Borthakur had demanded the money for absolving the complainant from tax liability and penalty.

“The victim was sternly told by Borthakur to pay an amount of Rs 30,000 as bribe, through one Rajesh Kumar Gupta, his close confidante. Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the directorate for taking necessary legal action against the public servant,” a statement said on Sunday.

“The bribe money was recovered from the possession of Gupta at 1.27 pm on Saturday, in the presence of the independent witnesses,” it said.

A case has been registered in Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) police station vide ACB P.S case (number 06/2022) under Sections 7 (a)/12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) and 120 (B) of IPC, against Borthakur and Gupta.

“Both have been arrested in the case while necessary legal follow up action is being taken,” the statement said.
