Shillong: Irked with the NPP-led MDA government accepting the support of 5 Congress MLAs, its alliance partner BJP has expressed disappointment and has decided to write to the chief minister seeking his clarification.
State BJP leaders on Friday sent their feedback to the Central leaders concerning this issue. Briefing the media at the BJP office in Shillong, Meghalaya BJP state president Ernest Mawrie said the meeting has been called regarding the recent political development.
“We are confused and also disappointed with the chief minister, so we will be writing to him and will seek a clarification,” said Mawrie.
He added that they would need an official record of the Congress supporting the BJP-backed MDA govt. “I have already stated that when this decision was taken, we (BJP) partners weren’t informed about it. We came to know through media reports,” said Mawrie.
Dr Chuba Ao, in-charge of Meghalaya BJP, recalled how PM Narendra Modi, in 2014 election campaign, had raised the slogan of Congress Mukt Bharat which really struck hard. “That was the agenda that every state started working on. Similarly, this is the slogan in Meghalaya too,” Dr AO said.
He added that the five Congress MLAs understood that they can’t survive, hence, they decided to support the MDA govt. “They have their own tactics and have done a lot of internal exercise and then joined,” said Dr Ao.
He said they have every right to know and, therefore, need an official record that the Congress wants to support the government.
“The Congress supporting us is their weakness. We are inviting them and there is no harm in supporting us because they are reducing themselves to zero,” said Dr Ao.
Reiterating that a Congress Mukt Meghalaya is already under process, the party would only require a clarification from the chief minister, stated Dr Ao.
The state party leaders also confirmed that they will not pull out of the coalition, and that anybody can come and join the alliance to strengthen the government.
