NorthEast United FC could not capitalise on their brilliant start as they lost 2-3 to ATK Mohun Bagan in match 37 of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2021-22 season at the PJN Stadium in Fatorda, Goa, on Tuesday. It was a high scoring match. V. P. Suhair and Mashoor Shereef scored the two goals for NEUFC while Liston Colaco and Hugo Boumous with a brace helped the Mariners score three goals and get back to winning ways.

The Highlanders had a dream start to the match. V. P. Suhair broke the deadlock, just two minutes into the game, courtesy of a brilliant header. The Mariners, however, played a counter-attacking game. ATKMB had most of the possession in the first half and looked like scoring several times. Finally, in added time of the first half, some sloppy work from the NEUFC goalkeeper Mirshad helped Roy Krishna take the ball under control. He made no mistake and fired in a cross and Liston Colaco leapt high and hit a beautiful header to score the equaliser.

NEUFC started the second half on a strong note creating back to back opportunities but failed to convert any. However, it was ATKMB that took the lead in the 53rd minute as Hugo Boumous scored the first of his two goals of the match. He scored another one in the 76th minute, giving the Mariners a two-goal lead. NEUFC did pull one back in the 87th minute as Mashoor Shareef scored but it was not enough. ATK Mohun Bagan was clearly the better team today. With this win, they move to fifth place with 11 points. Meanwhile, NEUFC has a strong challenge in hand. Khassa Camara’s injury is also not good news for The Highlanders. They next face table-toppers Mumbai City FC on Monday, December 27.
