Guwahati: An estimated 73.38 per cent total voter turnout was recorded in the by-elections to five assembly constituencies in Assam that was conducted on Saturday.
Polling was conducted with strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols. The highest voter turnout of 78 per cent was recorded in 41 Bhawanipur constituency followed by 28 Gossaingaon at 77.37 per cent, 107-Thowra at 75.07 per cent, 101-Mariani at 69.81 per cent and 58-Tamulpur recorded 67.88 per cent of voting, according to the official figure of the Election commission of India (ECI).
However, the total voter turnout percentage may go up as the report of many polling stations are yet to be received by the CEO (Chief Electoral Officer). The voting was peaceful overall and no untoward incident was reported from any part of the give assembly constituencies.
The fate of 31 candidates was sealed in the EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) in 1,176 polling station throughout the five constituencies.
Of the 31 candidates, eight each are in Gossaigaon and Bhabanipur, six in Tamulpur, four in Mariani, and five candidates in Thowra LAC. Of the 7, 96,456 electors across the five LACs, the total male electorates are 4, 03,374 and 3, 93,078 females, besides four transgenders.
By-polls in Gossaigaon and Tamulpur were necessitated due to death of the sitting MLAs, while the incumbents of Bhabanipur, Mariani and Thowra resigned from their seats.
