GANGTOK: Following the torrential downpour of last week which caused havoc across North Bengal and Sikkim, the National Highway-10 was restored on Tuesday evening after eight days.

Birik Dara, a crucial location near Rambi, about 35 kilometres from Siliguri towards North Bengal, had witnessed massive landslides with NH 10 cut off. About 20 meters road had been collapsed in Birik due to the heavy rainfall that was recorded for days in the hills since October 17.

The traffic had been detoured from the alternative routes via Lava and Peshok since then. However, after a rigorous work of back cutting and earth-moving by the PWD NH-10, one-way traffic has been initiated. The District Magistrate of Kalimpong, R. Vimala later said that Birik is finally restored after ‘rigorous work.’
