Kohima: Former president of Nagaland Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and chairman of Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency Visasolie Lhoungu passed away on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, legislators and several political parties mourned the demise.

He made noteworthy efforts to strengthen the BJP in the state. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and supporters. RIP.”

Rio remembered Lhoungu, who passed away at Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK), as a hardworking, sincere and diligent officer who served as the CEO of National Rural Livelihood Mission under the rural development department before his entry into state politics.

“Apart from his professional career, Visasolie was also someone who had sincere concerns for the welfare of the marginalized section of the society,” Rio said.

Nagaland BJP president Temjen Imna Along said that Lhoungu, who served as the state BJP president from 2016 to 2018, was instrumental in maneuvering the party.

“Being endowed with vast political acumen and experiences, he gave his best to uphold the Bharatiya Janata Party from the early stages of its formative years. His contribution in strengthening the BJP is remarkable,” Along said.

Lhoungu contested the 2016 State Assembly Election on a BJP ticket from 11 Northern Angami Assembly Constituency. “His passing is a great loss to Nagaland State BJP, and his immense sacrifices rendered towards the upliftment of the party shall ever be remembered for posterity,” Along added.

Those who associated themselves with him while he was in government service as well as when he headed Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency say late Visasolie was always supportive, non-intrusive in the functioning of the department and was a father-figure to his colleagues and subordinates.”
