Ahmed was sent to 14-day judicial custody on Thursday in connection with a case of the Crime branch of the Guwahati city police for a provocative statement against the martyrs of Assam agitation.

The SVC had arrested six persons on June 29, of which three were government officials, on charges of misappropriation of funds, over Rs 25 lakh meant for construction of roads under Mandia development block in Barpeta district.

An FIR was lodged based on findings of the regular enquiry conducted by the enquiry officer, who found that an amount of Rs. 25,08,323 was misappropriated in connivance and collusion of the officials and staff of Mandia Development Block without execution of works of 14 road projects under MLALAD (MLA Local Area Development fund) under Baghbar constituency.

Based on the findings of the probe, a case was registered against several government officers, members of construction committees and several others who were found involved in the criminal conspiracy and misappropriation of government funds.

“During the investigation, sufficient evidence were found against seven accused persons. Of them, six persons – Jadav Chandra Choudhury, then block development officer, cum secretary of the construction committee, Mandia Development Block; Md. Ainur Rahman, junior engineer cum technical member, Construction Committee, Mandia Development Block; Abdur Rezzak, president of Construction Committee; Sahjamal Ali, president of Construction Committee; Mujahidur Rahman, president of Construction Committee; Md. Yusufur Rahman, block development officer cum secretary, Construction Committee, were arrested on June 28 and remanded to judicial custody,” Kalita said.

The SP said that the investigation of the case also led to the fact that accused Sherman Ali had conspired with the other co-accused in the misappropriation of government funds meant for developmental works under the Mandia Development Block.

“We have already intimated regarding his arrest to the Commissioner of Assam State Legislative Assembly with a request to appraise the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly. The investigation of the case is on,” the SP also said.
