One arrested for placing bomb outside NPP office, another apprehended later

Shillong: In a major development, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday shared that one person has been arrested for placing a crude improvised device outside NPP office recently and that a few others are being traced.

“One arrest has been made and the person has already admitted that he had placed the bomb here. And through that, further investigation is currently on,” said the chief minister while speaking to reporters outside the NPP office on Thursday.

In another development in the evening, Meghalaya police said they have apprehended a suspect from the Civil Hospital in Shillong following reliable information.

Police said the man, identified as Ksankupar Kharkongor of Umphyrnai village, has been apprehended for his alleged involvement in the recent incident of placing an IED in front of National People’s Party (NPP) office.

Police said, during the course of the investigation, the suspect admitted to his role and also stated that he was member of the proscribed militant outfit HNLC. 

According to Assistant Inspector General of Police GK Iangrai, incriminating evidence has been seized from Kharkongor’s possession, and investigation is in progress to arrest more accused persons involved in the crime.

Earlier in the day, the chief minister had said, “We have managed to trace a few individuals who are involved not only in this case but also the last bombing case.”

Informing that the arrested individual’s interrogation is on and more leads will be found through him, Sangma had said, “Some more development will takes place in the evening in terms of others who are involved in this particular incident.”

On the prevailing law and order situation in the state and the fears of the general public, Sangma said, “Law and order situation is fine. This was an isolated incident that happened. Of course we are not undermining the seriousness of it.”

Terming the bomb incident a serious matter and a serious breach, the CM asserted, “The police department will do everything in their capacity to ensure that people responsible are caught and ensure that this kind of situation does not happen in future.”
