Shillong: Meghalaya’s United Democratic Party (UDP) Wednesday announced that it will not field any candidate for the upcoming by-poll for Mawryngkneng assembly constituency and will extend its support to the candidate fielded by National People’s Party (NPP).
Three assembly constituencies in Meghalaya – Mawphlang, Mawryngkneng and Rajabala- are going to the polls on October 30.
Briefing the media, UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh said the circle leaders of Mawryngkneng suggested that this time they won’t field any candidate and would like to extend their support to NPP candidate Pyniaid Syiem, who is also the sitting Member of District Council (MDC).
The party also officially announced the name of its candidate for the Rajabala constituency. Ashahel D Shira, a former MLA from Rajbala constituency (2013-2018), will contest from the same seat on a UDP ticket, while, as announced earlier, Late MLA SK Sunn’s son Eugeneson Lyngdoh will contest from Mawphlang constituency as a UDP candidate.
Shira had lost the 2018 elections from Rajbala constituency to late MLA Azad Zaman.
Asked how confident was the party since it did not do well during the last Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, Lyngdoh stated that in the last MDC election they have made inroads as far as Garo hills is concerned.
“We didn’t expect the number of votes we got in last the MDC election; it was encouraging and we felt Garo Hills is one area we can take part in during this upcoming election. By getting the right candidate for the right constituency, we decided to field Shira,” said the UDP president.
He added that the party had done its homework and felt that their official candidate will win this election based on the feedback from the people.
Earlier on Wednesday, UDP’s Eugeneson Lyngdoh, who had to hang his boots to step into his late father’s shoes, also filed his nomination at office of the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District.
The renowned footballer was accompanied by senior UDP leaders like Jemino Mawthoh, Lahkmen Rymbui, Titosstar Chyne and several others.
“I just filed my nominations and will be contesting on a UDP ticket. Today begins my career as a politician,” said Eugeneson.
Asked if it was the right choice opting to join the UDP instead of contesting as an Independent, Eugene said he was here because the people wanted him to contest on a UDP ticket and said he will listen to the voice of the people of his constituency.
He also stated that his football career had to come to an end following his father’s demise and that he will not be able to juggle two professions at the same time.
