Kohima: With the by-poll to the 58 Shamator-Chessore Assembly seat on the horizon, Nagaland BJP is making way for the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) to field a candidate.
Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister and Leader of the BJP Legislature Party Y Patton, on the sidelines of a meeting on Tuesday, said the seat sharing formula of the pre-poll alliance between the two parties will not be disturbed.
The decision was announced following the first meeting of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) – Nagaland’s opposition-less government on Tuesday.
Patton said the BJP will support the candidate who will represent Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio-led NDPP party. He said the Naga People’s Front (NPF) is scheduled to have a meeting to discuss if it will field its candidate for the by-poll.
However, with the formation of the oppostion-less government, it is unlikely that the NPF will contest.
The seat to 58 Shamator-Chessore Assembly Constituency was left vacant following the demise of former MLA Toshi Wungtung, who passed away on July 1.
The former legislator from the constituency held the charge of Advisor for the Departments of Information & Public Relations, SCERT and Village Guards before his demise.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for the by-polls to fill the vacant seats in 30 Assembly Constituencies in Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland among 10 other states and 3 Parliamentary constituencies.
The last date for filing nomination papers for the by-polls is October 8 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature for all seats, except in Assam, Bihar and West Bengal, is fixed on October 13, while scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on October 11.
The date of the poll is scheduled on October 30. Counting of votes for all the by-polls will be held simultaneously on November 2.
