Athuan Abonmai, former president of Zeliangrong Baudi, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland (AMN), who was allegedly abducted from Tamenglong district headquarters on Wednesday morning, was found dead hours later in Pallong village under Tamei police station in Tamei sub-division in Manipur.

He is believed to have been abducted by suspected militants of the NSCN-IM. Sources said Abonmai’s body had bullet injuries.

Reacting to Abonmai’s murder, the Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) on Thursday condemned the “kidnapping and brutal killing”. “Life is a gift from God and in a society, rule of law and justice must prevail to protect the sanctity of life,” the NPMHR said.

The human rights group said in a region where the people carry and bear a brutal history of conflict and violence, it is pained at how torture and killing of civilians by both state and non-state actors has devastated their land and their homes.

The NPMHR added that attempts to deliver peace and justice through violent means is drowning people into darkness.

“In any movement, there comes a point where violent means serves no purpose and social order gets dissolved in the cross-current of the conflict, and human reasoning disappears. We are failing to see our reality and continuing to justify our actions during chaos,” it said.

It added that no justification will salvage the dampened wound caused by the action of the perpetrators.

NPMHR said the “gravity of the situation is beyond the reasoning capacity of the perpetrators” or the “senseless actions does not matter to them” as what matters is serving their own vested interest.

“We are concerned how vested groups will politicize this tragedy to communalise and divide the people,” it said.

The Naga rights body has appealed all sections of society to remain vigilant, saying that anger and condemnation must not deprive the due course of justice for victims of such “senseless killings”.

Expressing condolences, it said, “No amount of justification will exonerate what was done to Abonmai.”
