Italy England Euro 2020

Italy beat England on penalties to become Euro champions after a 52 year wait.

England got off to a dream start through the unlikeliest of goal-scorers: defender Luke Shaw scored in just the second minute. For a team that had conceded only one goal in the entire tournament, this was the best that they could hoped for.

They held on to their lead for the first half and almost half of the second, until another defender, Leonardo Bonucci, equalised for Italy in the 67th minute.

And like the two semi-finals, the finals too headed into extra time. And almost on cue, penalties.

Funnily enough, there was a time when England hated penalties but such has been their confidence that going into the shootout, they seemed more confident. And they had home support.

But this is still England. For all the talk and hype, England has one international trophy of repute, and it showed: they missed three penalties and Italy, who kept their composure, rightly became champions. In the end, it didn’t come home.
