Kohima: The Nagaland state BJP unit on Thursday commended the Centre’s decision to extend the free food programme under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) till November, following the announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently.
Addressing a press conference in Kohima, state BJP president Temjen Imna Along said that the decision to extend the distribution of free food grain for around 800 million beneficiaries across the nation is a “historic” moment for the people.
Acknowledging the gesture, he said that the state BJP unit welcomes the magnanimous decision, adding that PM Modi is the “most kind-hearted PM”. While beneficiaries of the programme are ration card holders, Along assured that the matter to enrol un-registered persons for the scheme will be taken up with the government.
Amid reports of some village authorities charging for the distribution of free food grain, he said so far there has been no instance of it been reported to the state government, assuring that the scheme is implemented fairly without charge.
The party also lauded the Centre’s decision to provide free COVID-19 vaccination for adults from June 21 onwards. “We need to appreciate the efforts of the leadership of the day for taking overwhelming steps,” he said, further praising the Central government’s assertiveness to inoculate all by year-end.
With the central government taking things under control, he expressed hope that vaccines will be made easily available.
Along also stressed the need to be aware of the COVID-19 pandemic, and urged the people to join the fight against the disease. He hinted that the need to extend the lockdown, which is hampering the state’s economy, is also due to the lack of awareness and seriousness among the people.
Further, Along informed that the BJP party workers have relentlessly been undertaking activities across the state under the party’s clarion call “Seva Hi Sangathan” to create awareness and provide relief for those in need.
Highlighting the activities conducted by the party since the total lockdown in Nagaland last month, W Ngampa Konyak, spokesperson of the party, informed that over 42,310 masks, 12,620 litres of sanitisers, and over 6,760 immunity kits have been distributed to the public within the period.
The party also distributed ration to over 16,100 labourers, 16,780 food packs to the needy, 25,000 N95 face masks to frontline workers, around 350 PPE suits to the community health centres, primary health centre and sub-centres. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was also conducted in 635 booths across the state.
56 villages across the state were also provided with medical supplies such as ICMR prescribed medicines with doctor’s helpline numbers, PPEs, masks and other medical supplies through the PHCs, CHCs, sub-centres and village councils. The party assured that its helpline number +919863061767 is open for the public 24×7 for any COVID-19-related assistance.
