Agartala: At least four BJP workers were killed and 21 others were left injured in a tragic accident on their way back home from the Chief Minister’s rally in the Natun Bazar area under the Gomati district on Friday.

The injured have been admitted to Amarpur sub-divisional hospital and Gomati district hospitals. Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has expressed grief over the incident.

Speaking with reporters, Gomati district magistrate TK Debnath said a Mahindra Bolero pickup van overturned on the Natun Bazar-Amarpur road under Birganj police station.

There were 25 passengers in the vehicle. Four people, including three women, died on the spot. The deceased have been identified as Urbashi Kanya Jamatia (45), Mamata Rani Jamatia (26), Rachana Devi Jamatia (30) and Gahin Kumar Jamatia (65).

He said the injured were first taken to Amarpur Sub-Divisional Hospital. Subsequently, seven people were shifted to the Gomati District Hospital as their condition was said to be critical.

The BJP Gomati district president said the accident happened due to the negligence of the driver.

“Four party workers were killed. Arrangements have been made to rescue the injured and send them to the hospital,” he said.

He also said that Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and the BJP state president Dr Manik Saha had inquired about the incident and assured assistance to the families of those killed and injured.

The chief minister in a social media post said that four activists had died in a road accident on their way home from a BJP election rally in Amarpur.

“I am deeply saddened by this incident. Many activists were also injured. I extend my condolences to the families of the victims and pray to Mother Tripurasundari for the speedy recovery of the injured. I assure you that the party is by the side of everyone’s family in this sad moment,” he said.
