The 78th Golden Globes awards on Sunday night was packed with surprises as ‘Nomadland’ made history by picking the award for the best drama film, and its director, Chloe Zhao became the first female to win the top prize of best director.
The semi-fictional drama is about people living on the road and working menial jobs in recession-hit US.
Chinese-born Zhao is the first woman of colour – Asian descent – and only the second woman ever to win the Best Director award at the Globes.
Also, Chadwick Boseman was honoured posthumously as the Best Actor (Drama) for his role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”. His wife, Simone Ledward accepted the award on his behalf via Zoom call.
Boseman, 43, died in August last year following a four-year-long battle with colon cancer.
Ledward said, “He would thank God. He would thank his parents. He would thank his ancestors for their guidance and their sacrifices.”
Boseman achieved global stardom as King T’Challa of fictitious African country Wakanda aka superhero Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Meanwhile, “Minari”, a semi-autobiographical drama about a family of Korean immigrants trying to realise their American dream in the 1980s, won the best foreign film at the Globes following a controversy around its classification which led the movie to be overlooked in the race for the best picture.
Borat Subsequent Moviefilm also took home two awards as the best movie in the comedy or musical category, and Sacha Baron Cohen, the creator of the film won the best comedy movie actor. While Andra Day won for playing singer Billie Holliday in The United States vs Billie Holliday.
