Imphal: Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Ramdas Athawale, on a two-day visit to Manipur on Wednesday, strongly condemned the hurling of Chinese-made hand grenade at a local media house last week.

“As per the philosophy of Dr BR Ambedkar, there should be a total freedom of expression for media persons and whoever wants to practice journalism, he/she must do so freely without any disturbance or hesitation,” said the union minister during a press briefing at the conference hall of Secretariat South Block in Imphal.

Those culprit(s) involved in such cowardly act must be arrested and give them befitting punishment as per the Law, he added.

Athawale said N Biren Singh is doing good work for the people, especially for the ST, SC, OBCs and minority community.

Highlighting various schemes, including Pradhan Mantri Jan Ayushman Bharat (PMJAY), introduced in the country for the people, the minister further said that since the PMJAY scheme was launched in 2018. To date, around 28,000 people in Manipur have benefited from the scheme.

Stressing on the three contentious new farm laws, the minister said that the laws were passed at the Parliament because the union government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to support farmers.

“PM Modi was elected twice because the farmers supported him and voted for him. How will he pass laws against the farmers? There is a provision for them, that’s why the laws were passed for the benefits of farmers,” he added.
