With the Oscar season almost upon us, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unwrapped its shortlists for the 2021 Oscars in nine categories, including documentaries, international features, original song, original score, visual effects, and makeup and hairstyling.

Due to the pandemic, this will be the first year since 2009 that the VFX list doesn’t have at least one Marvel movie in it. Each of these shortlists will produce the category nominees, which will be announced on March 15.

A format has yet to be announced for the 93rd Academy Awards which will be presented on April 25, rather than its usual schedule in February, due to the pandemic.

Fifteen films will advance in the Documentary Feature category for the 93rd Academy Awards out of the 238 films that were eligible in the category.

Ten films will advance in the Documentary Short Subject category for the 93rd Academy Awards out of the 114 films that were eligible in the category.

Fifteen films will advance to the next round of voting in the International Feature Film category for the 93rd Academy Awards. Films from 93 countries were eligible in the category.

Ten films will advance in the Makeup and Hairstyling category for the 93rd Academy Awards and All members of the Academy’s Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch will be invited virtually to view 7 minute excerpts from each of the 10 shortlisted films on March 6, 2021. Branch members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.
