Ukhrul: People of Shirui village, located about 15 km from district headquarters Ukhrul, woke up to the rather unusual sight on Sunday, with their village covered in a blanket of snow.
According to locals of Shirui village, this is the first snowfall since 2015 which has snowed in the entire village.
The snow, locally known as ‘Horam Kathak’, was about two inches thick and covered entire rooftops.
“It’s very unusual to witness such heavy snowfall in the village this time of the year. Annually, it usually snowed at Shirui peak, which is home to the state flower ‘Shirui Lily’,” said Nickson Wungsek, a local.
But this time after a loud thunderstorm and lighting, the entire village was covered with snowflakes falling from the sky. Within a few hours, Shirui had transformed into a picturesque snow-filled village, he added.
The villagers witnessed the heavy snowfall from around 2:30 pm till 4 pm, he said.
This is only the third time my parents have witnessed snowfall in the village, said Nickson.
