Guwahati: Congress MLA from Badarpur Jamal Uddin Ahmed passed away on Tuesday midnight. He was suffering from heart-related ailments and was diabetic.
The 66-year-old legislator had reported of uneasiness on Tuesday evening and rushed to Karimganj civil hospital. He was about to be shifted to Silchar Medical College Hospital for better treatment, but he died before, said reports.
His rites will be held on Wednesday afternoon.
Ahmed’s death has come as a major setback for Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) ahead of the assembly elections scheduled for this year. Congress, which currently had 20 seats in the legislative assembly has come down to 19.
Another senior Congress leader and former Dergaon MLA Arati Hazarika passed away due to heart-related issues. She was 59.
“Saddened to learn about the passing away of two senior Congress leaders earlier this morning, Badarpur MLA Jamal Uddin Ahmed and ex-MLA Dergaon Arati Hazarika. My prayers and condolences are with their respective families,” tweeted Assam MP Gaurav Gogoi.
Former MP and All India Mahila Congress (AIMC) President Sushmita Dev also condoled the two deaths. She tweeted, “Extremely sorry to hear about the passing away of Congress leader Hon’ble MLA of Badarpur, Assam Janab Jamal Uddin Ahmed Saheb. My deepest condolences.”
“Lost a colleague Arati Kochari Former MLA Assam. We were together in the assembly and have fond memories of her. My deepest condolences,” she wrote in a subsequent tweet.
