Agartala: The Additional District Judge of West Tripura on Friday sentenced four persons to life imprisonment for the sensational murder of Sahajahan Miah in September 2013.
Sahajahan Miah was attacked by a group of people in Joypur in the outskirts of Agartala when he went to the shop of Khurshed Miah for purchasing certain goods. At that time, the accused had attacked Sahajahan with stick, iron rod etc., additional public prosecutor Arindam Deb said.
“Sahajahan used to run the mid-day meal in Joypur Junior Basic School. The accused, Jarina Begum, wanted 7 kg rice from him. Sahajahan refused to give it without permission,” Deb said.
After investigating the murder case, the police arrested 13 people and submitted a chargesheet to the court. In 2015, the case was transferred to the District and Sessions Judge’s Court. Charges were framed on January 7, 2016.
He claimed that there was some delay in handling the case because Sahajahan’s autopsy was done in Kolkata. As a result, the doctor’s appearance took some time. Moreover, the hearing has been delayed due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
“We produced 18 witnesses in front of the court in the murder case. However, the defence lawyer could not produce any witnesses for the accused,” Deb added.
“The court had convicted 4 out of 13 people after hearing from both the parties and after taking evidence. The court convicted Jarina Begum, Rafiq Mia, Majid Miah and Sajal Mia under Section 302/34 of the Indian Penal Code and sentenced them to life imprisonment. The court also sentenced him to 6 months imprisonment for non-payment of a fine of Rs 25,000,” the APP said.
The deceased Sahajahan’s mother, Maya Rani Bibi, expressed satisfaction after hearing the verdict but was disappointed with the acquittal of three more people. She said Ravi Khan, Mushid Miah and Sauvik Miah were also criminals. Among them, Ravi Khan is the main culprit of the incident.
“We have been receiving death threats since the verdict was announced,” Bibi said.
