Imphal: CORCOM, the coordination committee of seven valley-based militant outfits, has boycotted the Republic Day celebrations by imposing an 18-hour total shutdown in Manipur.

The shutdown has been declared from January 25 midnight until 6 pm on January 26.

While urging the public to restraint themselves from attending daily activities and remain indoors, a statement issued by CORCOM said the Republic Day celebrations are “a timely reminder to all the people of ‘occupied’ Manipur (Kangleipak)” and called for the people to introspect on the reality of their existence “as a race which has lost its independence.”

Essential religious activities, medical and emergency services will be exempt from the purview of the total shutdown in the state, it said.

“Since the Constitution of India empowers the Government of India to alter or re-draw the boundary of a state or a union territory under Article 3, there is an apprehension among the public that Manipur (Kangleipak) can be segregated into pieces any time,” the CORCOM said.

According to the CORCOM, the nature of the Constitution of India indicated that people in the state would be completely wiped from the surface of Earth if we continue to remain with India for a longer period of time.

Citing an example of Jammu and Kashmir, where the people were once enjoying special rights as guaranteed by the Instrument of Accession signed by its king Hari Singh on October 26, 1947, the statement said all those statuses were removed and the state was bifurcated. “However, leaders of the world and its citizens were just silent spectators since they couldn’t do anything, except the people of Kashmir continue to fight and defend their own rights,” it added.

“It is the duty of the people of Manipur to liberate from the clutches of India, which has annexed our land by making king Bodhachandra sign the Instrument of Accession and Merger Agreement,” CORCOM said in its statement.
