Guwahati: As Tezpur University (TU) conducted its 18th convocation on Friday, its chancellor, Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi made sure to attend it despite being admitted in the ICU.
Mukhi chaired the convocation to encourage the graduating batch of TU from a makeshift video conferencing facility set for him in Apollo Hospital, Guwahati.
Lauding his dedication, state health and education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “Hon Governor Assam Sri @jagdishmukhi though now in ICU at Apollo Hospitals, doing Duty – Nation before Self. As Chancellor of Tezpur University, he is chairing the convocation, while attached to Catheters, in a makeshift VC facility. Salute to his spirit & determination. Jai Hind”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually addressed the convocation with Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal’ Nishank’. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Tezpur Lok Sabha MP Pallab Lochan Das.
Sharing excerpts from the PM’s address, the education minister tweeted, “The way our government is involved in the development of North East, the way connectivity, education and health are working in every sector, there are many new possibilities for you. Take full advantage of these possibilities.

Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted, “Tezpur University, one of the premier educational institutions of Assam, is the pride of our nation. On this occasion, I congratulate the newly passed out students & urge them to mould themselves as skilled human resources and be the driving force of nation building process.”
A total of 1,218 students will receive their degrees and diplomas in the convocation.
