Aizawl: Mizoram State Election Commission on Friday announced elections to 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) to be held on February 16.
Mizoram State Election Commissioner Laima Chozah said that polling will be held in 274 polling stations from 7 am to 4 pm. Electronic Voting Machine will be used for the polling.
He said that the last date for filing nomination papers for the AMC polls is January 28 while the last date for withdrawal of candidature is fixed on February 1.
Scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on January 29 and counting of votes would be undertaken on February 18.

Chozah said there are a total of 2,18,870 electorates, including 1,17,191 female voters within the municipal area according to the latest roll published on December 31 last year.
Although the present AMC term had ended on December 10, 2020 and election was due in the same year, it could not be held due to the spread of Covid-19, he said.
“As Mizoram registered a significant decline in Covid-19 cases and moreover vaccination drive is being carried out across the state. We have consulted the state government and finally decided to hold the polls,” he said.
He said that the municipal administrator, who was appointed by the state government in December last year will cease to exercise power of the municipal authorities once the executive body is formed.
All the election process is scheduled to be completed by February 22, he added.
The AMC was established in 2010 under the Mizoram Municipalities Act, 2007.
There are 19 seats in AMC, of which 6 seats- Ward -III, VIII ,X , XIV, XVI and XIX are reserved for women.
In the last municipal polls held in 2015, the MNF had won 11 seats, followed by Congress, which won 7 seats.
Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC) had bagged one.
The AMC poll is expected to see a triangular fight among the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), main opposition Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and Congress.
All the three parties have already announced their candidates for the polls.
The BJP is yet to announce a second list of its candidates. The saffron party had announced the first list of 8 candidates on January 15.
