Manipur bans import of poultry and poultry products

Imphal: Amid reports of highly-pathogenic Avian Influenza in some parts of India, Manipur announced a temporary ban on poultry and poultry-related products from other states with effect from January 12.

An order issued by veterinary and animal husbandry commissioner H Gyan Prakash on Tuesday stated a temporary ban on entry of poultry and poultry products such as poultry egg, meat and live birds, including ducks or guinea, fowls or turkey and quails as a precautionary measure.

It further instructed that all the national highways connecting to the state and the airport will stop transporting poultry and poultry products to prevent an escalation of the disease in Manipur and other northeastern states.

The highly-contagious avian disease can cause a huge loss in terms of mortality and poultry trade, it stated.

All district deputy commissioners, district superintendents of police and district veterinary officers were instructed to take necessary steps to stop the movement of birds and eggs.

Commissioner Prakash also directed veterinary and animal husbandry director to take immediate steps for active surveillance against the disease.
