NCW member's shocking advice to women on 'how not to get raped'

A National Commission for Women (NCW) member, who met with the family of the 50-year-old woman from Badaun who was allegedly gangraped and murdered said the incident may not have happened if the woman had not have ventured out of her house in the evening.

Speaking with media, Chandramukhi Devi, NCW member, said, “A woman should not go out at odd hours under the influence of anybody. If she would not have gone out during the evening or was accompanied by a family member, then maybe this incident would not have happened.”

This comment has drawn flak from various quarters. Rekha Sharma, NCW Chairperson, clarified that NCW doesn’t stand by the statement.

She tweeted, “No I don’t..I don’t know how and why the member has said this but women have all the right move on their will whenever and wherever they want to. It’s society and state’s duty to make places safe for women.”

On Wednesday, Sharma had written to the Director-General of Police, Uttar Pradesh, seeking immediate intervention in the matter. The Commission also sought a detailed report on the action taken in the matter.

The incident took place on Sunday evening, when a 50-year-old woman had gone to a nearby temple at around 5 pm. When she didn’t return after a few hours, her family went to the police station but were turned back. Later at around 11.30 pm, three men dumped her body outside her home.

According to reports, the victim’s family said that the three men were the temple’s priest Baba Satyanarayan, his disciple Vedram and driver Jaspal.

The post-mortem report confirmed rape, injury to her private parts, and fracture in her legs. The priest said that the woman fell into a well nearby the temple, and they merely helped her out of it.

Budaun police chief Sankalp Sharma said that disciplinary action is being taken against local policemen for negligence. “I have ordered his suspension,” he reportedly said.
