The Bhutanese police won hearts for the calmness with which they asked Indians, who had thronged the Indo-Bhutan border for their ‘mandatory’ New Year picnic, to leave since Bhutan is under lockdown.
On December 23, the Bhutan government had announced a seven-day lockdown, starting from December 23 to curb COVID-19. On December 29, the Himalayan nation extended the lockdown until the New Year festivities are over.
In a video, personnel from Bhutanese police is seen asking merry-making Indians to vacate the area amid the surge of COVID-19 cases.
The police personnel uses the most polite words for the picnickers who are across a stream of water. He is equally concerned about COVID and their well-being, as he asks them to leave quickly because it is going to get dark.
The respect shown by the Bhutanese police personnel in the video is a perfect example of why the country calculates its progress based on Gross National Happiness, and not other economic benchmarks.
