Tripura: Fire destroys several documents at land records and settlement office
Agartala: Several important land records, maps, and old files were gutted after a massive fire broke out on Monday night at the directorate of land records and settlement office in the Palace Compound area.
The fire, which erupted around 9:30 pm, engulfed and nearby buildings. It was brought under control by firefighters after two hours.
The settlement office had old records and papers. However, officials maintained that no valuable records were destroyed in the fire that broke out last evening.
The place compound has the old heritage Ujjayanta Palace, Agartala Town Hall, TTAADC old council building, the official residence and All India Radio station.
The revenue minister Narendra Chandra Debbarma visited the directorate of land records and settlement office premises and took stock of the situation on Tuesday morning. He said the government would launch an investigation to ascertain the reason behind the fire.
Speaking with reporters, Debbarma said that old records which are of no use were kept inside the office. "We will see whatever is left if it can be auctioned, and the office renovated. The reason behind the fire is yet to be ascertained. The loss was not massive since the office has mostly old records and furniture," Debbarma said.
