ASHA workers across Assam will go on a two-week strike from January 6 after the state government refused to pay heed to their long-pending demands, said their association Sadou Asom Asha Karmi Santha (SAAKS).

The ASHA workers will boycott their duties until the state government fulfils their demands.

Talking to EastMojo, Dipti Devi, President, SAAKS informed that ASHA workers, despite offering their services devotionally and dedicatedly under the state government’s health department for 15 years, have not got their demands fulfilled.

“Even after our protest during the Winter Session of Assam Legislative Assembly recently, the State Government has not paid any heed to our demands. The ASHA workers are left with no choice but to boycott our duties and go on strike from January 6 to January 20,” added Dipti Devi.

There are about 33,000 ASHA workers all over Assam, said Devi. They were appointed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 2005 for promoting universal immunisation, community counselling, referral and escort services for the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) and other healthcare initiatives under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), now National Health Mission (NHM).

According to SAAKS, at present they have been imposed with about 72 duties to perform in lieu of a nominal amount of remuneration.
