Guwahati: The office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), West Police District has issued a prohibitory Section 144 of the CrPc in and around the Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary for community fishing.
The office has prohibited the assembly of more than five people in and around the Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary from January 1 to January 31. Only the Executive Magistrate, forest officials, and police personnel on duty are exempted from this order.
According to the order, Nabaneet Mahanta, DCP West, was made aware that some people from the villages around and adjoining Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary, and people from various parts of Guwahati city are likely to venture and organise community fishing on January 3 and thereafter. These concerns were raised by the Divisional Forrest Officer of Guwahati Wildlife Division.
Reacting to the concerns, the DCP police stated that such ventures are illegal under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972. He said that this would cause irreparable damage to the sanctuary’s ecosystem presented by the Divisional Forest Officer. Hence it is necessary to take up preventive measures to protect the wildlife of the area.
