According to the order, Nabaneet Mahanta, DCP West, was made aware that some people from the villages around and adjoining Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary, and people from various parts of Guwahati city are likely to venture and organise community fishing on January 3 and thereafter. These concerns were raised by the Divisional Forrest Officer of Guwahati Wildlife Division.

Reacting to the concerns, the DCP police stated that such ventures are illegal under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972. He said that this would cause irreparable damage to the sanctuary’s ecosystem presented by the Divisional Forest Officer. Hence it is necessary to take up preventive measures to protect the wildlife of the area.
