Agartala: In a tragic incident, a 4th-year MBBS student in Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) allegedly died of suicide at the boy’s hostel on Monday evening.
The 23-year-old student was a resident of Belonia under South Tripura district.
According to police, the deceased, Adarsh De was supposed to meet his friends in the evening, but he did not reach the place where his friends were waiting.
“Some of his hostel mates knocked on his door, and when he did not respond, they broke the door. He was rushed to the trauma centre immediately, but the doctors declared him dead on arrival,” the police said.
Speaking with reporters, medical students said that he was a brilliant student having secured a place in the toppers list, both in Madhyamik and Higher secondary board examination from Belonai English Medium School.
Family members have been informed about the demise of their only son. His death has cast a shadow of deep grief and mourning in the Belonia sub-division.
In a report published by the National Crime Reports Bureau (NCRB), two states from the Northeast, Sikkim and Tripura ranked among the top 10 states with the highest suicide case in 2019.
Sikkim with a suicide rate of 33.1 per cent is second to Andaman and Nicobar with 45.5 per cent against the national average of 10 per cent. Tripura stands seventh with a suicide rate of 18.2 per cent per one lakh population.
