Effigies of NDA and controversial CAA burnt by pressure groups in Shillong

Shillong: Carrying forward their demand for immediate implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya, four pressure groups – Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi-Jaintia Garo People (FKJGP), Ri-Bhoi Youth Front (RBYF) and Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) held a public meeting at Motphran on Thursday afternoon.

Members of the pressure groups gathered at Motphran parking lot and were seen carrying placards that demanded ILP and MRSSA and opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The pressure groups have also threatened the government that if the Umling entry and exit point is not inaugurated and functional by December 21, 2020 they will take over and handle it by themselves.

Pressure groups have time and again been demanding the central government to implement ILP. They have also questioned why the Central government is hesitating in giving ILP when it gave Manipur ILP.

On December 19, 2019, the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly passed the ILP resolution and so far it is awaiting for the Central government to give its nod to implement ILP. Similarly, the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) is yet to get the approval of Governor Satya Pal Malik.
