Shillong: Meghalaya Leader of Opposition (Congress) Dr Mukul Sangma on Thursday has asked the Governor to implement the original Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) 2016 while the amended MRSSA is waiting for the Governor’s assent.
Dr Sangma’s response followed his meeting with Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik on Thursday afternoon.
Briefing the media, Dr Sangma said, “The amended Bill was passed, and till today it is yet to be implemented. We tried to know why it is pending. If it is likely to be delayed, we want the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act 2016 in its original form be implemented immediately. This is to ensure that the concerns of the people are to an extent possible addressed by the operationalisation of this Act.”

Dr Sangma also submitted a letter to the Governor, raising the issue of MRSSA and other pertinent issues like the late implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state.
“This demand for ILP which was spearheaded for a long time by some of the NGOs of the state particularly the student body, has grown louder and louder after the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA),” he said.
Dr Sangma also apprised the Governor of other issues like non-payment of salaries to employees of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.
