Guwahati: Rajya Sabha MP from Assam Ajit Kumar Bhuyan has written to Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, requesting him to resume local train services in Assam at the earliest.
Highlighting the plight of the poor, as well as students and patients in Assam, who depend on local trains, the journalist turned politician wrote: “Resumption of local train services is a dire necessity for such people as their daily livelihood depends on it. ”
Noting that local and short distance train services were not resumed even after the withdrawal of lockdown in Assam, unlike other states, the MP mentioned that workers, local farmers, small traders and vendors “who sell their products in urban areas every day are also in trouble”.
“Under these circumstances, you are earnestly requested to take the necessary steps for the resumption of local train services in Assam at an early date,” the MP’s letter states.
According to reports, since last month, the Assam Railway Passengers’ Association has been demanding resumption of local train services. This comes after almost all public transportation services, including buses, have resumed services, with the exception of local trains, which is adversely affecting the economically weaker sections.
