Agartala: Tripura police have arrested one person in connection with the murder case of the fireman Biswajit Debbarma, 48 hours after Pradyot Kishore Deb Barman, royal scion and chairman of the Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA)—a socio-cultural organisation gave an ultimatum of 7 days to the state government.
Speaking with EastMojo, Deb Barman said, “We welcome the move of the state police to arrest the murderer of Biswajit Debbarma, but one arrest is not enough. Others should also be held immediately.”
Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb called me and informed me about the arrest of one person, Deb Barman added.
On Thursday, the TIPRA chairman had served a 7-day ultimatum and threatened to launch a massive movement against the state government if they failed to arrest the killers of Biswajit Debbarma, the fireman who was lynched during a clash that erupted over the resettlement of displaced Brus in Kanchanpur sub-division.
“The police must arrest those who have brutally murdered Biswajit Debbarma during the protest. This is 2020, and the Tiprasa (indigenous people or son of the soil) will not remain silent. We are not speaking against anyone or any community. Our demand is only to arrest the criminals who have murdered innocent fireman”, Deb Barman added.
Deb Barman also appealed for peace and calm in Kanchanpur sub-division and cooperation from all communities to maintain communal harmony.
“I would ask the chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb to visit the house of the slain fireman and meet the victim’s family. This will send a message that the state government stands in solidarity with the victims. The CM should also visit the house of Srikanta Das, who was killed in the open firing on the same day”, Deb Barman said.
The state government had earlier announced a magisterial inquiry into the violence that erupted in November.
In a press conference on Saturday at Dharmanagar, North district of Tripura, Lalhminga Darlong, Deputy Inspector General of police, Northern, said a case had been registered in Panisagar police station and a resident of Subratanagar in Kanchanpur sub-division, Debu Malakar (25), had been arrested.
