Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday launched the website of Majuli Cultural University in Majuli. The website www.muoc.ac.in will serve as a one-stop platform for disseminating information about the different courses and other aspects of the university to the visitors and students to the largest inhabitable river island.

Majuli is also the home constituency of Sonowal, and according to him, this university is mooted to grow as a non-affiliating multidisciplinary higher educational institution. Additionally, with specialisation in the studies and research of culture, this university is going to play a role in culturally unifying the greater Assamese society while strengthening the socio-cultural foundation of the state, he said.

Chief Minister’s Office’s official Twitter handle shared few pictures of the ceremonial launch of the university website stating, “CM Shri @sarbanandsonwal arrived at his home constituency, the sacred river island district of Majuli and launched website of Majuli University of Culture http://muoc.ac.in. A presention was also made before the CM about various courses to be taught at the university.”

Sonowal also added that the Cultural University would allow Assam’s youth to study the colourful cultural heritage of the state and that too in a systematic way. He also added that there is a need to research folklore, traditional lifestyles of the indigenous communities to prepare a syllabus of the courses so that the University can become a model for other countries on cultural co-existence.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Dambarudhar Nath, gave a presentation about the different courses that the University would be providing to the students. This includes language and linguistics, audio-visual arts, social science, literature, yoga, Indian traditional medicines, religious studies, comparative analysis, etc.

Temporarily the University would begin its classes at the Majuli College as it constructs its infrastructure at the 100 bigha land campus provided at the riverside near Garamur.
