Guwahati: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati and its counterpart at Benaras Hindu University (BHU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on November 27 to start a joint Doctoral Programme from July 2021.

The director of IIT Guwahati, Professor T. G. Sitharam along with the director of IIT BHU, Professor Pramod Kumar Jain said that this is the first time in the country that two IITs have come together to offer a joint degree program.

Professor Sitharam had proposed the idea of a joint PhD programme at the 53rd IIT Council Meeting held in September last year.

“Through this academic collaboration, both the institutes are expecting a significant boost in high-quality research and foundation for further academic collaborations,” stated the press release issued by IIT Guwahati.

In accordance to the National Education Policy (NEP2020), these educational reforms and academic collaborations between premier educational institutes is initiated to promote multidisciplinary academic programs and research developing a knowledge-based economy of the country, mentioned the press release.

Moreover, IIT BHU is planning to introduce a joint master in technology (M.Tech) program on similar lines to provide multi-institutional and multidisciplinary education. IIT Guwahati has shown their interest in such a program.
