Shillong: Meghalaya Confederation for Academic Welfare (MeCAW), on Thursday held a protest march at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) for the demand of a new Vice-Chancellor and to appoint a permanent VC at NEHU.

MeCAW Convener Roy Kupar Synrem said that MeCAW had carried out the march with other demands in mind.

The protest was also carried out in Tura NEHU campus. MeCAW felt that Vice-Chancellor SK Srivastava has not performed well, raising the issue that the rank of NEHU has dropped to 74 among 100 universities in the country.

The body has demanded that a homegrown local qualified professor from NEHU should be given a chance to lead NEHU. They also demanded that the present VC’S term should not be extended.

They further stated that their other demand was that during the tenure of the VC, there were financial irregularities and wanted an investigation to be carried out into these irregularities.

MeCAW also submitted a memorandum to PM Narendra Modi, Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal and to President of India Ram Nath Kovind, who is also a visitor of NEHU.

MeCAW is a body comprising of civil societies group, teachers association, students association as well as all academician and stakeholders who feel responsible for the academic situation and interest in Meghalaya.
