Around 30 houses were gutted in a massive fire that broke out at Harijan Colony in Jorhat, at around 6 am, Saturday morning.

The devastating fire which occurred in Raja Maidam Road of Harijan Colony engulfed a large residential area. However, no causalities have been reported as people were out of their houses to celebrate Chhath Puja.

Fire tenders rushed to the spot, but due to the high intensity of the blaze, it could not be immediately doused. The fire also intensified due to the explosion of eight gas cylinders. Thereafter, tenders were then brought in from nearby town Teok, and the blaze was eventually doused after a long struggle.

Deputy Commissioner Roshni Korati who reached the site of the fire told the media that a bigger disaster was averted due to timely intervention.

While speaking with EastMojo, Disaster Management ADC, Damodar Barman said, “Our initial investigations have revealed that at least 26 families were affected by the fire and a total of 98 people were shifted in a relief camp.”

He added that it is “difficult to ascertain the cause of the fire” as of now.
