Imphal: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Monday reiterated the power of judiciary in democratic governance while maintaining the recent judgment of Manipur High Court in regards to scrapping Kakching MLA as null and void.

Singh was attending the swearing-in ceremony of BJP’s Mayanglambam Rameshwar Singh, 48, as a new MLA of Kakching assembly constituency at Speaker’s chamber in Imphal.

“We hail the verdict of the High Court of Manipur in giving the true judgment to the people of Manipur,” said the chief minister.

In the last three and half years of our ruling government, we have witnessed some political crisis. However, we have increased the number of BJP MLAs and I am confident of winning the absolute majority of the by-polls, Singh added.

Singh further appreciated the public, especially the concerned voters of the four assembly constituencies that went on voting recently.

It may be noted that Yengkhom Surchandra Singh, 65, was elected as the MLA of Kakching AC from a Congress ticket. However, the High Court declared the election as null and void due to non-disclosure of information on an affidavit filed during the 2017 assembly elections.

As per reports, BJP’s Rameshwar Singh secured the second-highest votes with 10,503 while Surchandra got 11,133 votes. Singh had joined the BJP after resigning from the Congress party.

My priority is to actualise and implement the very vision of our chief minister’s ‘Go to the village, go to the schools and go to the hills’, said the newly-sworn-in MLA.

“As per the provision of section 100(1)(d)(i) of the RP Act, the judgment has been passed and it is a non-disclosure of materials facts to the voters which amounts to undue influence and corrupt practice,” said Rameshwar.

I am very happy that my faith in the judiciary of India has enhanced and I hope that this kind of judgment will be passed in Manipur and rest of the country, added the BJP MLA.
