Imphal: Manipur saw polling amid tight security on Saturday for the by-elections at the four assembly constituencies to fill the vacant seats at the State Legislative Assembly, with 11 candidates fraying the elections.

Voters arrived at the polling stations as early as 7 am to cast their voting rights and the voting continued till 5 pm.

Of the 11 contesting candidates, three are from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), four from the Indian National Congress (INC), one from National People’s Party (NPP) and three Independent. However, this time all eyes are on Wangoi AC since all the three national parties have fielded their candidate.

At 22-Wangoi AC in Imphal West district, three candidates namely Oinam Lukhoi Singh (BJP), Khuraijam Loken Singh (NPP) and Salam Joy Singh (INC) will fight for the seat.

For 30-Lilong AC in Thoubal district, there are two Independent candidates namely Mohd Abdul Nasir and Y Antas Khan, whereas Md Azizul Haque Khan is contesting from the Congress ticket.

Another three candidates of 34-Wangjing Tentha in Thoubal namely Paonam Brojen Singh (BJP), Moirangthem Hemanta Singh (INC) and Independent candidate Sarangthem Manaobi are fraying the election from the assembly constituency.

Lamtinthang Haokip (INC) and Ngamthang Haokip (BJP) are contesting the election from 51-Saitu AC of Kangpokpi district.

Altogether 1,57,658 voters (77,046 male, 80,604 female and 8 third gender) in the state are casting their votes at across 236 polling stations designated for the four assembly constituencies.

EastMojo reported from Wangoi AC and discovered many voters compromised physical distancing, though they are well equipped with face mask and hand-gloves, posing the threat of spreading the COVID-19 disease.

As per the CEO Manipur office, a total of 78.66 per cent of voters cast their votes till 3 pm, with Lilong AC recorded of 84.07%, Saitu AC with 80.42%, Wangjing Tentha registered 74.90% and Wangoi AC with 74.07%.

Meanwhile, till the time of filing this report, no unwanted incident was reported from the four assembly constituencies.
