Defending champion Mumbai Indians displayed a sensational all-round performance against the Delhi Capitals, as they registered a comprehensive victory in the Qualifier 1 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
Riding on half-centuries from Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan backed up by some quality bowling display from Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah ripping through the Capitals top order, the Mumbai Indians are through to their sixth final in the IPL.
Put into bat first after losing the toss, Mumbai Indians got off to a flying start owing to a blistering knock up at the top from their in-form opener Quinton de Kock.
After losing their skipper Rohit Sharma for a first-ball duck off Ravichandran Ashwin’s bowling in the second over, Quinton de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav added 62 runs of just 37 balls for the second wicket.
It was Ravichandran Ashwin again who provided the breakthrough for the Capitals dismissing de Kock for 40 off 25 in the eight over.
Continuing his dream run in the season, Suryakumar Yadav(51 off 38) brought up a promising half-century, but was dismissed soon after by Anrich Nortje in the 12th over, with Mumbai in a comfortable position for a strong finish having 100/3 on the board after 12 overs.
An unbeaten 60-run-partnership off just 23 balls between Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya for the sixth wicket helped the Mumbai Indians to post a massive total of 200/5 at the end of their 20 overs.
Ishan Kishan brought up his fourth half-century in the tournament as he scored an unbeaten 55 off 30 deliveries along with Hardik Pandya who was absolutely brutal on the Delhi Capitals bowlers as he scored an unbeaten 37 off just 14 balls.
Coming out to chase a massive total in a crunch game, Delhi Capitals got off to a horrifying start, as Trent Boult delivered a double-wicket maiden over to start with, removing Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane in the very first over and then Jasprit Bumrah removed Shikhar Dhawan in the next over without a single run on the board for the Delhi Capitals.
Delhi Skipper played some very good looking shots but was dismissed for 12 by Jasprit Bumrah in the fourth over, leaving Delhi in a serious spot of bother with 20/4 on the board.
Marcus Stoinis and Axar Patel tried steadying the ship for the Capitals with a partnership of 71 off 44 deliveries for the sixth over.
Marcus Stoinis played very well for his 46-ball-65, before he was dismissed clean bowled by Jasprit Bumrah in the 16th over. Bumrah was simply outstanding in the night as he dismissed Daniel Sams just two balls later for a duck picking up his fourth wicket.
Axar Patel tried hard towards the end, but it was a bit too much to expect out of him and he was dismissed for 42 off 33 in the 20th over by Kieron Pollard, with the Delhi Capitals eventually falling short of the Mumbai target by 57 runs, as they could only manage 143/8 at the end of their 20 overs.
