The Guwahati Press Club has condemned the arrest of Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami.
Club President Manoj Kumar Nath and General Secretary Sanjoy Ray in a statement said, “Reopening of an old case of abetment to suicide that was closed for want of evidence, and arresting Editor In Chief of Republic TV Network in connection with the said case is very unfortunate. The manner in which Mr Goswami was arrested clearly leaves room for suspicion towards witch-hunting.”
Members of the Guwahati Press Club also urged the Mumbai Police to ensure that the senior journalist is treated fairly without any prejudice. “We have full faith in the justice delivery system of our country and hope that justice will be done,” the statement added.
Earlier, the Editors Guild of India also issued a statement on the arrest of Goswami, saying they are shocked to learn about the incident. The arrest according to the guild is “extremely distressing,” and they called upon the CM of Maharashtra for a fair trial for the senior journalist.
Even Twitter is divided over the arrest with many senior BJP politicians tweeting in support of Goswami all while condemning the arrest. Many celebrities also slammed the Maharashtra government for this act.
The Mumbai Police on Wednesday morning arrested Republic TV’s Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami in alleged connection with an old abetment to suicide case.
It is alleged that Goswami had abetted the suicide of a 53-year-old interior designer. According to officials of Mumbai Police, an architect and his mother committed suicide in Alibaug over alleged non-payment of dues by the channel Republic TV in 2018.
